As was already mentioned in a recent article in the New York Times, Brussels counts as one of the most important metropolises of contemporary art and appears to compete with Berlin on this front.
The exhibition GEMISCHTE GEFÜHLE for the first time shows a selection of artworks by young artists active in Brussels in the former Tempelhof Airport. The project as the first in a series of collaborations between both cities. A Berlin answer to Brussels is already in the making.
GEMISCHTE GEFÜHLE is preoccupied with a central question: How can cultural identity be re-thought and applied interculturally in these current times and under the conditions of globalisation and migration?
The artworks from seven artists which are on display, underline the status of Brussels as an open centre for inter-cultural border-crossing and intersecting.
The integration of renowned classics such as James Ensor, Marcel Broodthaers, Kris Verdonck, Kendell Geers, and Koen Theys, alongside the aesthetic quality of the works on display is the only way to decide which confirmatory or critical impulses the exhibition can send in the direction of Berlin in terms of the abolition of identity boundaries.
The curators are convinced that the airport of Tempelhof, with its checkered history up to its current use as an emergency shelter for refugees, offers the right platform to discuss contemporary art and the interaction between cultures — so why not also with GEMISCHTE GEFÜHLE.
